Overview
Since its founding, Volkswagen has made cars that are fun to drive, and it has continued to combine sophisticated dynamics and performance with comfort and technology to rival European luxury brands. That trend continues with the 2021 Tiguan, a mid-size SUV that represents the best of the brand.
The Tiguan carries over last year’s stunning design. Its burly size has been the perfect intersection of function and form.
Front-wheel drive models come standard with three rows of seats, which are available on all-wheel-drive models. The Tiguan also includes a backup camera, roof rails, Bluetooth® connectivity, VW’s Car-Net infotainment center with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and a six-speaker audio system. Drivers can also outfit their Tiguan models in a number of styles, ranging from the standard S to the tech-filled SEL Premium with 4MOTION® that abounds with driver-assistance features.
The Perfect Ride for…
Drivers looking for a comfortable and roomy compact crossover SUV. The Tiguan expands on many of the design elements and features of the Volkswagen Golf and Jetta, and that includes its size. The Tiguan, which is first and foremost a family car, provides drivers with more cargo space and seating. But it's also perfect for anyone looking for the utility of a full-sized SUV in a smaller, more affordable ride.
Drive & Handling
The Tiguan features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. It’s offered exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a standard front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive option.
The powertrain features a Budack-cycle design that closes intake valves sooner, creating faster airflow in the cylinder and reducing fuel consumption. A standard stop-start system also conserves fuel at stoplights, which shuts off and restarts when you lift your foot off the brake pedal.
Key Features
Expanded Cargo Space
The Tiguan’s 2.0-liter turbo is tuned to deliver more mid-range torque with the goal of improving fuel economy. Of course, its increase in size (and weight) also increases torque compared to the previous generation. With that size also comes increased cargo capacity. The 2021 Tiguan increases cargo capacity by over 30 percent to 73.5 cubic feet when the seats are folded down. That means you’ll have plenty of room to transport furniture or carry luggage on longer trips.
Third-Row Seating
The 2021 Tiguan also grew 10.6 inches compared to the previous generation, which added enough room for Volkswagen to include a standard third row of seating in its front-wheel-drive models. With added space all around, you’ll be able to pile the kids in to grab a slice of pizza or transport your grocery haul more efficiently than in the previous model.
Alternative Options
While the Tiguan is designed to offer more space and utility, Volkswagen boasts a number of other options to meet different price points and driving needs. The Atlas stays true to the mission of Volkswagen, but as Volkswagen’s largest SUV, it offers more headroom, legroom, and just plain room to keep your family comfortable.
