2021 Volkswagen Atlas

Overview
Volkswagen plans to be a much bigger player in the U.S. car market, and the 2021 Atlas is key to that. It’s Volkswagen's flagship model, and it's exceedingly popular at the moment. More than almost any other previous Volkswagen model, the Atlas is tailored specifically for the US market. But it’s still a Volkswagen where it counts.
The Perfect Ride for...
Volkswagen fans who want the capability of a three-row SUV. The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas is a type of vehicle American buyers are familiar with, but with all of the exceptional qualities of a Volkswagen. Starting at an MSRP of $31,555 for a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas S,* this seven-seat SUV has something for everyone.
Drive & Handling
The Atlas is available with two engine options, both shared with other Volkswagen models. The 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injected TSI four-cylinder engine produces 235 hp, while the 3.6-liter V6 produces 276 hp. An engine configuration unique to Volkswagen, this narrow-angle V6 takes up less space than a conventional design.
Both engines are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission that VW says was designed to maximize efficiency. The Atlas comes standard with front-wheel drive, while Volkswagen’s 4MOTION® all-wheel-drive system is optional. The 4MOTION® system has a Driving Mode Selection feature that allows drivers to alter the vehicle’s behavior based on the conditions.
Technology
While the Atlas is a mainstream model, it also comes generously equipped. The Atlas features an available Digital Cockpit reconfigurable dashboard display, which replaces the traditional analog instrument cluster with a dynamic high-resolution display. Plus, passengers can enjoy the standard 6.5-inch in-dash screen displaying the available Car-Net® infotainment system with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility, and a 12-speaker Fender® premium audio system powered by a 480-watt amplifier.
Volkswagen engineers have thoughtfully implemented sophisticated but user-friendly technology throughout the vehicle, including Climatronic® 3-zone automatic climate control to keep all three rows of passengers comfortable. Maneuvering is easier with the standard rearview camera and the available Area View camera system, which utilizes multiple exterior cameras to render an overhead view of the Atlas. Remote start is also available, as is VW Car-Net® Security & Service, a mobile app that can connect to your Atlas and tell you where you parked or even call for roadside assistance.
Design
The Atlas was redesigned for 2021. Volkswagen designers were tasked with creating a vehicle to emulate the competition, but with an unmistakable VW character. The resulting design is still recognizable as a Volkswagen but is also large and in charge.
The design conveys that VW character through simplicity. The front end features an elegant horizontal grille and LED headlights and daytime running lights, while the sides of the vehicle are sparsely decorated with a few horizontal lines in key places. Boxy wheel openings give the Atlas a bit of traditional SUV toughness.
The interior is both flexible—thanks to what Volkswagen calls an “innovative folding seat solution” for the third row—and full of tech. That folding seat solution provides multiple seat configurations for various cargo needs, producing up to 96.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the second and third rows folded down, so you'll have all the space you need, whether you're hauling friends and family or a week's worth of camping gear.
The second row has optional captain's chairs for the big kids, or a bench seat so it can also safely and securely fit as many as three child seats for the little ones. And everyone will feel at home with plenty of cup holders, up to four USB ports, and easy 3rd-row access. VW also offers an available panoramic sunroof that lets in all the light, and it can also retract to let in all the air, too.
Safety
Safety features available on the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas include anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, the usual complement of airbags, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning with lane keep assist, and park assist.
The Atlas is also offered with an automatic post-collision braking system. The system addresses the fact accidents aren't one single event but a number of events that occur after the initial impact by automatically applying the brakes when a collision is detected. For 2021, Volkswagen added Travel Assist and Emergency Assist to the list of available safety features for the Atlas.
Alternative Options
Those on the lookout for something a little more compact should consider the Volkswagen Tiguan, which shares its MQB bones with the Atlas. A stylish, capable crossover that sports an upscale design that is equal parts sophisticated and sporty, the Tiguan delivers on all fronts. Looking for something a little more sedan-like? Consider the Jetta. Designed to be just as approachable and stylish as the original, the 2021 Jetta boasts excellent fuel economy, while resembling a more family-friendly midsize sedan. Like the Atlas, it comes packed with technology and safety features designed to make any road trip a breeze.
